Wow! This was such an interesting opening to a book. I am completely taken already. The idea of Death narrating this story captivates me. I think it is such an interesting approach to depict Death as a character that views what he does as a job..."In my line of work...".
I also find the format very interesting. These short, factual bursts of information that are coming straight from Death..."Here is a small fact. You are going to die." This is an interesting approach for an author. It breaks the reading up in a way that holds my attention. It is like shifting gears.
It looks like colors will play a large role in the book. Death seems to relate everything back to a specific color. I think the part where he points out the colors of the swastika is definitely some foreshadowing of the importance that Nazi Germany will play in this book.
I also notice that Zusak utilizes so many examples of personification in this section. "...globe dressed in snow...", "Trees wore blankets of snow.'
My favorite line so far is, "Perhaps ten meters to my left, the pale, empty-stomached girl was standing, frost stricken." Beautiful! Sad! So powerful!
I think I am really going to enjoy this book.
So, This here is kinda cool. I know that my commenting history isn't....well.....yeah. but I think that I probably feel the same way about the book...I was sucked in, and then I had to use a portal gun to get out...no I'm just kidding. but i really was drawn into the book, because usually, a good book draws you in.
ReplyDeleteI like your choice for the favorite line. Your analysis of Death was very eye opening. The foreshadowing of Nazi Germany was something I didn't notice!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ethan on the favorite line. It is so poetic and sad and beautiful at the same time! Really interesting things I never would have thought of.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with you, Mr.T, on the point about changing gears. I find that books, even my favorites, can start to lag sometimes. This one definitely keeps my attention more than other books.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with the fact that the short bursts of information keep me on my toes. Also, I love that you favorite sentence so far is "Perhaps ten meters to my left, the pale, empty- stomached girl stood, frost stricken" It is a really powerful statement and shows a lot of emotion. I also find it interesting that you pointed out all the foreshadowing. Sometimes, it is hard to tell when Death is foreshadowing rather than just telling.

The arrival of Nazi Germany......A scene with dark clouds rolling in would sound like a good image to portray this, wouldn't it? Because it's kind of the dark thing that threw the world off kilter. See where world history leads into this? World war one might have been the last war, and everything would have been fine. But then the second world war happened, and communism got into china and Vietnam, starting more wars, and a lot of bad things came out of it. Kinda sad.
